Central Air and Heating Systems

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Our central heating and air conditioning systems are an intrigue part of our lives. They determine whether or not our homes are inviting and comforting during the long, cold winter months. While it has a large impact on our daily lives and our homes, there’s a good portion of us out there who are unaware of their maintenance and upkeep requirements. Heating and cooling systems run without much intervention, but they still require a bit of upkeep and maintenance to keep them running at peak efficiency.

When it comes to central air and heating systems, the same air ducts are used to pump both cold and heated air throughout your home. During the cold winter nights, we tend to gravitate towards the heater. On hot summer days, we turn down the thermostat and crank up the air conditioning. These systems are fueled by mainly electricity or gas, some even being solar powered. Both systems are connected by the air ducts, which should have proper insulation. Inadequate insulation can allow upwards of 60% of heat to escape, so it’s important to ensure that your air ducts are properly wrapped and insulated.

The air ducts are just another reason why it’s important to keep up on the necessary heating and air conditioning services to keep your system working at peak efficiency. While the level of insulation on your heating ducts is important, it’s not the only or main thing that will help your heating system work at its peak this holiday season.

Making sure your furnace is properly maintenanced by a HVAC professional at least once a year will help keep the intricate parts and components in good working order, ensuring that any worn out parts or pieces are switched out and replaced before causing any problems. There are steps that you can take on your own to help keep your heating system up and running, one of which being changing and cleaning the air filter. Over time, it builds up dirt and clogs itself. Going in once a month or so to make sure the air filter properly cleaned and ready for to the task ahead.

There’s a large portion of our lives that are structured around our central heating and air systems. It governs the comfort level within our homes and can mean the difference between a warm and cozy winter and a chilly, uncomfortable one with increased chances of finding yourself sick throughout most of it.

Prepare This Fall With Professional Air Duct Cleaning

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

With the first day of Fall being just about a week away, now is the best time to talk about the benefits of professional air duct cleaning and why it’s not only recommended, but important as well. Truth be told, there are many benefits and reasons why you would want to have your air ducts cleaned, especially by a professional. Despite this, a good number of homes go without any kind of air duct cleaning, many because the thought of their air ducts being dirty never really crossed their minds.

With the fall and winter months comes a large demand on your heater, some of us running it more often than not during the cold and dark winter months. That drastic increase in usage means that anything inside the air ducts is going to be circulated around your home more often, increasing risk of triggering allergies. Overtime, dust and other nasty bits accumulate in your home’s air ducts. Not only does this cause your whole system to work harder to move the same amount of air, but it also means that you’re circulating dust and anything else in your air ducts throughout your home.

A professional air duct cleaning is just the type of heating services you should be looking into this Fall, along with an inspection of your heating system to ensure everything is in good working order. You probably don’t want to attempt cleaning your air ducts yourself, since it can be a bit complicated if you don’t have the right equipment, let alone get a big messy if your ducts haven’t been cleaned recently. We have equipment specifically designed to clean air ducts, which makes the whole process as painless and simple as possible.

Shortly after having your air ducts cleaned you’ll notice a dramatic increase in your homes indoor air quality. This increase will help stave off colds and flues this winter, helping you cut down on any sick days that may be coming your way. Nobody likes being sick, and most of us get flu shots or take some other form of preventative measure against being sick in the cold winter months, yet very few take the time to help increase the quality of the air in their homes – where they spend the good majority of their time.

Increased health and decreased energy bills are two good reasons to have your air ducts cleaned this Fall, but I have yet to mention my favorite reason for it – less dusting all winter long. Homes get dusty, especially in the winter when everything is all shut up to keep in the warmth. With dusty air ducts, you’re effectively putting a thin layer of dust all around your house. If your air ducts are clean, there will be far less dust in the air, thus meaningless dusting for you all winter long.

I could go on about the specific benefits of having your air ducts clean, but listing more won’t make it any more important or recommended. If you want to have a cleaner, healthier home this upcoming winter, take some time to get your air ducts cleaned.

Air Conditioner Maintenance

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Keeping your heating and air conditioning system well maintenanced is something that we all should be doing, but most of us aren’t. Like any other piece of machinery that’s used on a regular or semi-regular basis, air conditioners need regular tune-ups and repairs. Many large and expensive problems start out as small problems or issues that can be easily repaired or fixed; however, if left unchecked, these small problems can quickly turn into large ones requiring an expensive repair or replacement.

When an air conditioner is left without regular maintenance, small decreases in efficiency, both in cooling power and energy usage, start adding up and compounding each other, ultimately causing the whole system to work harder for fewer results. Some common signs of an under maintenanced air conditioner is trouble maintaining the temperature within the home, constantly running to maintain that temperature and increased energy bills.

There are steps you can take at home to help maintain your air conditioner, increasing its lifecycle and efficiency in the process. The easiest and most effective of them is making sure you change or clean the air filters regularly – they get dirty and clogged up, causing a decrease in overall airflow. Another good tip is making sure you clear away any obstructions from the outside unit, such as newspapers, leaves, etc.

While there are steps you can take on your own to keep up to date on your air conditioning maintenance, your best bet is having professional AC maintenance. In the spring they will look at your air conditioner to make sure it is ready for the demand that summer will bring and again in the fall to ensure your furnace and heating system is ready for the dark and cold nights of winter.

Maintenance is important and isn’t something that should be overlooked or taken lightly. When caught in time, small issues and problems can be fixed and repaired before they escalate and compound, requiring an expensive replacement.

Summer’s Right Around the Corner

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

And that means that the summer heat is soon to follow. Sure, it’ll be nice at first, but the delightful break from the winter and spring cold will be short lived as the temperatures climb well into the 90′s and beyond to require a third digit. The onslaught of the summer heat means that your air conditioner is in for quite a work out, and could probably use a cleaning and a tune up before the temperature gets too far out of hand.

There are several reasons why you would want to have an AC tune up before really putting it to the test, but ensuring good performance and having the air ducts cleaned are high up there on the list. These two services when combined will be the biggest money saver for your monthly bills, allowing optimum energy efficiency and clean and uninterrupted air flow throughout your home.  Not only will the air itself smell better by not having to travel through dusty and dirty air ducts, but it will be cleaner and healthier for you and your family.

If you’re one of our many maintenance plan clients, than you won’t have to worry about it too much. We’ll be out soon, if we haven’t already, to take a  look and make sure everything is clean and ready for its summer marathon. For the rest of you, now is the perfect time to call us for a tune up and to see if our maintenance plan is right for you.

Spring Air Duct Cleaning

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

It’s about time the weather warms up! I was afraid the cold season would linger around like a friend who’s oblivious to the fact that they’ve overstayed their welcome. While the increased temperature will bring more daylight hours and fun in the sun, it will also be bringing with it the need to run the air conditioner to keep things comfortable inside, and now is the perfect time to make sure your air ducts are clean and up for the task.

Air Duct Cleaning Service

Would you know if your ducts looked like this?

There’s a lot of stuff that can build up in air ducts over time. Dust, debris, lint and even mold and even insects have all been found inside neglected air ducts, and they can all play an impact on your health, as well as how well your air and heating system operate. Having dirty or clogged air ducts causes a loss in air pressure, making the whole system work harder to push the air around – not to mention that the air itself will contain particles of whatever is building up/growing inside the ducts.

Luckily for you, and anyone living with you, we’re here to help with our professional air duct cleaning services. We can make sure your air ducts don’t look like the one above, but instead look like this.

Clean Air Ducts

See the difference?

One of the main reasons why the air quality inside your house can be worse than the air outside is because of what’s being circulated in it. By ensuring your air ducts are clean, you can make the air inside your home cleaner and healthier at the same time.

Healthy Indoor Air

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

With the country seeming to be more focused on their health and that of their families, you’d have thought that there would be more attention on the quality of the air inside our homes. This, however, doesn’t seem to be the case very much at all.

Apparently, they’re not as important as you thought.

An E.P.A. study done a few years back showed that the air quality in the average home can be up to five, count ‘em, five times dirtier than the air outside. With figures like this, it’s surprising that most haven’t even thought about the air in their home’s be dirty, or unhealthy. Luckily, there are a few easy steps you can take to help the air in your home be as clean and healthy as possible.

First of all, be sure to open your windows. Sounds like common sense, huh? Well, you’d be surprised. One of the main factors in unclean indoor air is that the air doesn’t get circulated enough and begins to stagnate. This is easily solved by opening a few windows and getting some fresh air in.

Another suggestion to increasing the quality of your homes air is to get your air ducts cleaned. If you’re like most people, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “I’ve never thought about having them cleaned before…” If this is you, then you definitely need to have them cleaned. Over time, gunk and debris build up and clog the airways. They also get circulated throughout every room of your home. Oh, and the gunk I mentioned also includes possibly mold and even rodents and other animals, just so you know.

The last bit of advice we can give is to have an air purification system installed. They’re not that complicated anymore, and are pretty easy to obtain. Essentially, it’s an ultraviolet light that kills germs and bacteria in the air before it has a chance to get you sick. In fact, if you were to inhale one of these dead microbes, it would only serve to increase your immunity to them in the future.

Optimizing Your Heating and Cooling Systems – Part 1

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Everybody likes saving money, yet we all like using our air conditioners and heaters to keep comfortable in our homes. To help you achieve both, we’ve put together this handy little list of ways you can maximize your heating and cooling systems efficiency without costly investments.

    • Adequate Insulation – You can run your heater or air conditioner all you want, but if you don’t have proper insulation in your home, than you’re just throwing your money away. With the right amount of insulation, heat won’t be able to penetrate through your walls, keeping the temperature within your home controllable and easily managed. Since heat rises, it is very important to make sure your home has a well insulated attic or crawl space. While the attic is the first place you want to make sure is properly insulated, it is not the only one. You also want to ensure that your outer walls, as well as interior dividing walls, are all properly insulated.

    • Seals and Windows – I don’t know about you guys, but I love the windows in my place. The only problem is that they tend to be horrible for maintaining temperatures within the room. During the winter they act as giant cold spots, and in the summer they heat up an entire half of the room. Doors can be just as bad. The best way to combat this is the make sure your home has proper weather seals around the doors and windows – this will help keep the cold/warm air from escaping.

  • Clean System – A clean system is an efficient system, and this is especially true when it comes to your ventilation ducts. Over time, dust and debris tend to build up in your air ducts – it’s just part of the game that we all have to live with. As it all builds up, the air flow throughout the vents becomes not only dirtier and more unhealthy, but the whole system ends up working harder to achieve the same results. Do yourself a favor and get them cleaned. Doing it yourself can be very complicated, and can get dirty rather quickly if you don’t have the right equipment.

Be sure to check back soon for part 2.

How Clean is the Air in Your Home?

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

It is something that we do not really think about too often, something that most of us just assume is naturally clean, but the shocking truth is that the air in your home could be worse than the air outside.

At least breathing the air won’t get me sick, right?

It is wintertime, so what do we do? We close the windows and turn on the heater, of course. While this means warmer winter nights spent cooped up indoors, it also means that the same air is circulated repeatedly, which can lower the air quality in your home over time, and help that winter cold linger a little longer than you would like.

There are a few simple tricks that will help you increase the air quality in your home this winter that we’re going to cover today.

  • Household plants – chances are you have one or two of them throughout your home. Having indoor plants are wonderful for increased air quality. Plants thrive on the pollutants that tend to accumulate in your home, all the while letting off clean and fresh air.
  • Dusting and vacuuming – keep the dust and small debris in your home down to a minimum. This will prevent dust and other particles from circulating in the air and help keep you and your family healthy during the long, cold winter months.
  • Open the windows – when was the last time you opened the windows in your home? Been a little while, has it not? It is never a bad idea to let in some fresh air to flush out the old, stale air you have been breathing for the last few months.
  • Get your air ducts cleaned – can you remember the last time you had your air ducts cleaned? If you answered anything longer than six months, than it is time to start thinking about it – anything longer than a year and you are asking for trouble. Over time, your air ducts collect dirt, debris, and even mold. Get them cleaned and see and instant boost in air quality.

Luckily, we are here to help you get the air in your home back up to a clean and healthy level. Give us a call today and see what we can do to help make your winter not only warm and comfortable, but healthy as well.

Fall Checklist

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Summer is cooling down, and fall is quickly approaching, ushering in the time of year when the leaves turn colors and children go door to door in search of free candy. With the changing of the seasons comes a changing of the weather, and an increased need to use the heater. So, with the need beginning to rise, shouldn’t you make sure your central heating system is up to date on maintenance? We’ve gone ahead and put together this handy checklist to help get you on the right track.

#1: Maintenance – You’ve probably heard it before, and we’ve mentioned it a few times in other blogs, but it can’t be stressed enough. Maintenance for your heater, just like maintenance for your car, needs to be done if you plan on keeping it in running condition. You wouldn’t let your car go without an oil change or a look under the hood, would you? Same holds true for your heater.

#2: Cleaning – You like a clean house, right? We all do, but no one likes cleaning. Okay, some people like cleaning, but most of us don’t. What most people don’t realize is their air ducts are probably the dirtiest part of their house. Dust, debris, and even bugs tend to accumulate inside your air ducts and can be circulated throughout your home every time your central heating system kicks on. Luckily, we’re here to help with our professional air duct cleaning services. Let us help you get your home really clean.

# 3: Repairs – Sometimes mechanical parts break down and just need to be replaced. This is true for any piece of mechanical equipment, from your microwave to your garbage disposal, and your AC and heater are no different. If some parts need to be replaced, you could be paying a lot more than you need to on your utility bills. Let us help you out, because the last thing you want to do is put off any central heating repairs that your unit might need.

Fall is quickly approaching, and now is the best time to make sure you’re setup for the colder months. If you find yourself having central heating problems, give us a call and let us make sure you’ll be able to spend it in comfort, and without having to pay and arm and a leg for it.

Does Your Home Live up to Indoor Air Quality Standards?

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Summer seems to be calming down and giving us some pleasant temperatures to enjoy. We may be running our air conditioners less, but we’re still running them, circulating potentially dirty air throughout our homes.

Unclean air ducts can be home to many nasty things like bacteria and mold, dirt, debris, and even insects and rodents. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want anything running through my air ducts, and I definitely don’t want something growing in there.

This looks totally safe

The air inside your home might not live up to indoor air quality standards – a study performed by the EPA showed organic pollutants to be 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors. So, what makes the air inside your home so much dirtier than the air outside?

There are a few reasons behind this, one of them being the simple fact that the air inside your home doesn’t get circulated nearly as much as the natural air outside, you know, with all that wind and stuff. Another reason is that nasty stuff starts to build up in air ducts, growing as it goes unchecked. Mold and bacteria are obvious concerns, especially if someone in the house gets sick easily. The constant exposure to mold spores and germs can cause an illness to linger, or for you to just generally feel under the weather for a long time.

You win this time, nature.

There are various indoor air quality tests you can have done to see if the air in your home is good for you or not, allowing you to know whether or not you should look into getting your air ducts cleaned. If you can’t remember the last time your air ducts were cleaned, or think that it may be time, look into our professional air duct cleaning services and get your homes air quality back up to par.
